Brene Brown

A very warm welcome and thank you for visiting my website.

My name is Gillie Farnworth, I am a qualified counsellor and psychotherapist and a registered member of the BACP and an accredited registrant member of the NCS. I provide professional and confidential counselling and psychotherapy to people 18 years of age and over; offering private rooms in Newport, Gwent with a safe and welcome environment. My practice is easily accessible, just a short drive from junction 24 of the M4, with parking available.

First Steps

How do you choose your counsellor? It can be overwhelming when first looking for your therapist, how do you know which one to pick? There are so many to choose from. One of the most important aspects of therapy is the relationship between the client and the counsellor, for many reasons, not least because you need to feel comfortable opening up to another individual. The initial session will give us a chance to meet, discuss what your needs are, whether you require short or long term therapy (I offer both) and how I might then be able to help you. You will be able to ask questions and allay any fears or anxieties you may have. Occasionally this consultation may be enough and you will choose not to proceed further with therapy. However usually most people will choose to continue on with a number of sessions, at which point an agreement is made. Our work can be time limited or open-ended where there is no predetermined date but with opportunities to review our progress.

Counselling and Psychotherapy

Counselling is often described as ‘the talking therapy’. It is a process designed to provide clients with the time and space to explore, understand or come to terms with the issues they have; this is done in a confidential, non-judgmental environment. Counselling is not advice giving, more, helping you look at what is possible whilst avoiding telling you what to do. Its about you as the client gaining control and not the counsellor taking control. A counsellor answering the question ‘What would you advise me to do?’ with ‘What ideas do you have?’ is helping the client to explore and recognise that they have a part to play in the therapy and need to seek their own answers from within. Counselling has many different approaches; Humanistic, Cognative Behaverial Therapy (CBT) and Gestalt Therapy, to name but a few. I am primarily a humanistic counsellor, but work in an integrative style, which means I will tailor each session to suit your individual needs using one or all of the different counselling models. My humanistic approach will ensure you are listened to, valued and respected. I provide comfortable discreet rooms to enable this work to progress and you to reach your full potential.

The Fast Trauma Cure

Traditionally trauma has been treated over long periods of time, maybe even years. This can often be a very painful experience for the recipient, revisiting distressing memories that you would really rather forget, hence many find it easier to avoid seeking help altogether. I am experienced in working with The Fast Trauma Cure, which is otherwise known as 'The Rewind' technique. Although this cannot erase the memory, the technique works by allowing the individual, whilst in a safe relaxed state, to revisit the traumatic memory and store this as an ‘ordinary’ non-threatening memory; instead of a memory that continually activates the flight or fight response. It can be used to treat any trauma from PTSD, rape, sexual abuse, child abuse, bullying and much more.

My Qualifications and Training

I am fully trained and qualified in helping clients with issues such as anxiety, stress, trauma and much more. The majority of my experience has been gained whilst working closely with vulnerable adults within local support services. I have also consulted with multi-national companies with reference to stress management as required. In addition to this within my private practice I have worked for numerous occupational and private healthcare companies providing counselling and psychotherapy as needed.
